Drawing Classes at Wild at Art KIDS

Taylors Lakes, Melbourne | Ages 5+ Beginners to Intermediate

Taylors Lakes, Melbourne | Ages 5+ | Beginners to Intermediate

At Wild at Art KIDS, our focus is on nurturing each child’s creative voice while teaching solid drawing skills and techniques. In every class, our artists learn new drawing methods, explore different mediums, build confidence and develop their own style — all with the gentle guidance and support of our passionate teachers.

Our students quickly discover that everyone is an artist — what makes the difference is having time, guidance and the opportunity to practise, explore and learn the techniques that bring their ideas to life. And just like learning to ride a bike, drawing grows through practice, patience and the courage to simply give it a go.

What Makes Our Drawing Classes Different

Our kids drawing classes balance skill-building and creative freedom. We teach essential drawing techniques — from line, shape and proportion to shading and perspective — while encouraging each artist to follow their own interests and imagination.

Each session combines:

  • Skill development: Foundations in drawing and technique that grow with each term your child is with us
  • Personal expression: Space for each child to explore their own style, ideas and subject matter
  • Individual guidance: Our experienced teachers tailor instruction to each student’s age, ability, interests and learning style.

We meet kids where they’re at — and guide them to extend their skills while keeping the joy of creating alive in every session.

Age groupings for our kids drawing classes (Updated for 2026)

We had lots of new artists (younger and older) join our studio in 2025 . So for 2026, we’re adjusting our age groups to further support how children learn, focus and create at different ages. This will help us offer the right balance of skills, freedom and challenge for each age group.

The new groupings for kids drawing classes in our Taylors Lakes studio are:

  • Ages 5–6 – building confidence, coordination and creative thinking through fun, achievable projects, that also offer scope for individual expression and style
  • Ages 7-9 – strengthening technical skills while encouraging imagination and experimentation
  • Ages 9+ and 10+ – developing more advanced skills, personal projects and creative independence

We also offer small class sizes. This means each student receives individual attention and support, ensuring they continue to grow at their own pace within the new groupings.

Why Drawing Matters

Drawing isn’t just about making pictures — it’s about learning to see differently.

Through drawing, kids learn to observe, plan, make decisions and express themselves visually. They gain persistence, patience and problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the page.

Most importantly, they learn that art is a process — full of discovery, curiosity and joy.

Dive into Drawing

Our Ages 5–6 drawing class is a fun and colourful introduction to drawing. Children explore simple skills like shapes, lines and textures through playful projects that feel more like “making” than formal lessons.

We use lots of kid-friendly tools—oil pastels, sketching & watercolour pencils, charcoal and paint sticks — so young artists can experiment freely.

Projects are short, hands-on and joyful, with plenty of choice and movement to suit younger attention spans. The focus is on building confidence, trying new things and enjoying the process, not creating perfect drawings.

This class is gentle, relaxed and full of creativity. A lovely first step for young children who love to draw and make art.

Commencing Monday 2nd February – Monday 30th March

Please note – no class Monday 9th March, 2025 (Labour Day)

Dive into Drawing

Our Ages 7–9 drawing class offers a great combination of learning new drawing skills and keeping art fun, playful and creative. Children at this age can focus for longer and are ready for more technique, but still enjoy exploring and adding their own ideas.

We’ll introduce simple techniques like shading, proportion, perspective and observation — through engaging, child-friendly projects that cover a variety of styles and subjects. In Term 1, artists will explore character design, flip-book animations, practise linework with ink, draw still life objects, zoom in on textures like fur or scales and play with patterns and abstract ideas inspired by artists such as Joan Miró.

Our teachers will pair mediums, techniques and skills with space for each artist’s imagination, personal choices and their own drawing style to shine through. This class helps kids build confidence, develop foundational skills and enjoy the process of making art.

Commencing Wednesday 4th February – Wednesday 1st April

Dive into Drawing

Our Ages 10+ class is perfect for young artists who want to deepen their skills, learn new techniques and grow their own artistic style. Whether they’re beginners or already drawing constantly at home, every student is supported at their own level.

We explore more detailed and expressive drawing skills — things like shading, texture, depth, accurate observation, perspective and working from references. Students also learn practical approaches such as using grids to improve proportions, sketching anatomy and faces, and layering colour with pencils to create smooth blends and rich detail.

Projects are varied and inspiring. In Term 1, artists will dive into close-up flower studies inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, design symbolic self-portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo, explore reflections and light, and work on imaginative concept designs and illustrated stories.

This class is relaxed, fun and welcoming — a space where older kids can challenge themselves, try new materials and begin (or continue) shaping a drawing style they feel proud of.

Absolutely! We have 2 art teachers currently. Di is a primary school teacher with more than 8 years of experience in visual arts. Jodie has a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts degree with a particular talent for sketching and drawing and has experience in teaching.

Here at Wild at Art KIDS, we only have 7 participants per class. This would ensure that we can focus on each individual progress during each session.

All sessions are designed as a drop-off session. This would give your kids the freedom to create, chat and collaborate with other children.

What Our Happy Parents Say

Di offers a safe, fun environment where children can use their imaginations freely to create. She inspires them, supports them and celebrates their successes with them. I have had two children attend Di’s classes and both have truly loved their experience with her. Highly recommend.

Kimberley

Di has been extremely wonderful with my twins the last two terms. She has taught them patience, how to share and wait there turn and of course some brilliant pieces of art.
They are excited to go every Saturday morning and come home with multiple pieces to display.
Extremely grateful for the opportunities presented in Wild at Art KIDS.
Thank you Di

My husband and I are amazed at the skill and quality of the pieces he brings home each week- his talent far surpasses mine and he is only 8! 🤣 He loves Di and she works so hard in making the classes fun and engaging whilst still teaching her students the necessary skills. So glad we signed up to her art classes!!
